My name is Lisa, I spend my day-to-day life in the Emmental on a farm working in rubber boots and overalls. For two magical days, I had the opportunity to feel like a princess and stay overnight with my boyfriend at Schadau Castle in Thun. Please allow me to share my experience with you.

A trip to the castle

Schadau Castle was built many years ago as a summer residence on the southern shore of Lake Thun, right by the mouth of the Aare river. It is located in the middle of a beautiful English park, the Schadaupark, which enchanted me with its romantic, fairytale-like appearance.

The newly renovated 3-star boutique hotel offers nine individual rooms, the design of which is a reminder of nobility in times gone by. The large tower suite, featuring breathtaking views of Lake Thun and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, was our home for the night.

The sparkle in my eyes said more than words.

As soon as you open the large wooden entrance door to the castle, you are immersed in a special world. In the entrance area, a beautiful sandstone staircase leads up to the rooms on the upper floors. One feels more than a little privileged to go up to one’s suite. The tower suite is very spacious and in addition to featuring a bedroom and bathroom with shower, it even has a living room with a small desk and chaise lounge. The sparkle in my eyes said more than words.

What fascinated me most was the balcony. In addition to fantastic mountain and lake views, here you are very close to the castle walls and the tower. I could have marvelled at the ornate figures on the façades for hours, all the while imagining legends and fairytales.

The castle’s kitchen treats diners to delicious specialities on the ground floor or on the castle terrace. We enjoyed a unique ambiance during dinner before retiring to the tower room. It was particularly special when the voices of the restaurant guests slowly became softer and softer as night fell. The night was very quiet, with the sound of the waves of Lake Thun gently washing up on shore. In such a relaxed atmosphere, sleeping is truly a dream.

Thanks to the great weather the following morning, we were also able to enjoy breakfast on the castle terrace. It was a quiet weekday morning and we were practically alone outside. This is exactly how a break from everyday life should feel!

Ship Ahoy

The enchanting morning atmosphere with the warm rays of sun glistening on the water on the lake made us eager to spend the day exploring Lake Thun. It is possible to take the historic Blümlisalp steamboat for a full Lake Thun tour or to get off at any of the ship’s stops to explore the surrounding area. The Blümlisalp was once the largest, most powerful and most elegant ship to sail the lakes of the Bernese Oberland. In my opinion, it has remained so to this day.

We travelled past Hünegg Castle in Hilterfingen to Oberhofen Castle. Here there is a beautiful castle park, which is well worth a visit. Continuing in search of castles, there is the option of taking a boat towards Spiez. There, the unique Spiez Bay as well as Spiez Castle await your discovery. One can then return comfortably back to Thun via train.

Two days as a princess and now back in the present – that’s exactly how I felt. This experience will stay with me forever.
