A kayak tour, a walk along the riverbank and a convivial fondue in a wooden chalet – Lake Brienz is also worth a visit in winter.
Kayaking on a wintery lake
If you don’t feel up to skiing but still want to spend a few hours in a "winter fairy tale", Bönigen is the place to be! Here the Hightide kayak school offers guided kayaking trips on Lake Brienz. There is no need to be afraid of the cold as each participant is wrapped up in a drying suit before they start! You paddle over the lake in small groups and enjoy the silence, the play of light on the water and the snowy mountain scenery which extends around the water and between the Emmental and the Bernese Alps. By the way: the tours also take place under an overcast sky – according to the organisers, "the scenery then is even more dramatic and the experience even more impressive". Kayaking in winter
Lakeside walk from Bönigen to Interlaken
Although you can catch the local bus back to Interlaken after your kayaking adventure, you would be missing out on the chance to explore the secluded lakeside path. This walk takes about 40 minutes and most of the time you will be following the shores of Lake Brienz. With an area of almost 30 square kilometres, this is the largest mountain lake in Switzerland.
Mid-afternoon fondue in a cosy wooden chalet
You’re sure to be starving after all that fresh air! Luckily for you, the Laterne Restaurant awaits at your destination. Behind the rustic wooden façade there is an equally rustic dining area where they serve the finest fondues for miles around. If you find the large selection (eight variations are available) overwhelming, we suggest you try the wonderfully smooth morel fondue. If you do not like fondue, you will find an alternative on the traditional menu. restaurant-laterne.ch (German)
Dessert at the Grand Café Schuh
For dessert, you will need to "move along" to the traditional "Schuh" – this elegant Grand Café under its typical half-hipped roof is THE sweet spot in Interlaken. Delicate fruit tarts, eclairs, profiteroles, caracs and cream slices provide the "icing on the cake", so to speak, for your afternoon coffee. The sophisticated pralines served at the "Schuh" are just as much loved as are their superb pastries. These are conceived and created on their own premises. schuh-interlaken.ch
Hot tub with a view
Before it is time for you to return to everyday life, you would do well to stop over in Brienz for one last time. Here, you can either soak up the warm water with one other in an intimate setting, or as a group, while you enjoy the surrounding scenery through the rising steam. If you wish, you can have a glass of champagne served by the charming hot tub team. The hot tubs are open in winter season. hotpot-brienz.ch
