Autumn pleasures steeped in alpine charm

Autumn in and around the Destination Gstaad and the Lenk-Simmental Region never fails to delight with its alpine charm and authenticity. The picturesque colourful meadows against mountain tops with a dusting of snow in the background offer a splendid holiday scenery for biking enthusiasts, hikers and connoisseurs of the good life to enjoy.

Day 1

Lauenen: Hiking to the Lake Lauenen

Lake Lauenen is one of the most popular spots in Switzerland, vibrant with natural energy, and the hike begins in Lauenen. The delightful lake is located in the middle of a nature reserve, surrounded by dense forests. Its unique atmosphere is there for you to enjoy. The mountains and trees are reflected in the water’s surface, and those wishing to venture out onto the lake and gliding across its waters can hire rowing boats from the restaurant. Tip: After the hike treat yourself to a snack at the cosy Restaurant Lauenensee before setting off on the trail back to Lauenen.

Day 2

Lenk: AlpKultur® days in Lenk

The local alpine culture is widely celebrated at the AlpKultur® days in Lenk. During the festivities there are workshops on paper cutting, making up floral wreaths to adorn the cows, and during the Hornussen tournament (a traditional Swiss sport) you can try your hand at hitting the ‘nouss’ or puck. Another highlight of this alpine festival are the Simmental cows with their floral decorations, and it is from their ranks that Miss Lenk is ultimately crowned.

Culinary tip

Gstaad: Fondueland Gstaad

How do you turn a Swiss traditional dish into a culinary adventure? By ordering a fondue backpack of course! Two mountain huts and two oversized caquelons (fondue pots) are ideally suited as cosy backdrops for enjoying a fondue to panoramic views. Just remember to pre-book your backpack the day before from one of the dairies in Schönried, Saanen, Gstaad or Zweisimmen.

Accommodation tip

Lenk: Bed & Breakfast at the Bühlberg

Sweet dreams are even sweeter when overnighting at a Simmental farmhouse that’s some 150 years old. Modern design elements were added to the old traditional structure when the farmhouse was converted into a guest house. The six cosy bedrooms offer the ideal retreat after an eventful day. The barn with its open fireplace and adjoining bower are the perfect spot for a well-earned break, not to mention the pretty garden.
