Fun and frivolity in the lower Old Town
Creative, uplifting and energetic: Every August, around 150 artistes from all over the world transform the streets of Bern into a delightful summer open-air festival.
Busker is an English word and describes someone who performs in a public place. The range of performances that can be encountered in the Bern Buskers Festival is correspondingly diverse. Music, dance, theatre, comedy, street performance, puppet theatre, art and artistry attract 70,000 visitors to Bern every year. The professionalism of the artistes who perform across the many small stages and the beautiful backdrop of the Old Town of Bern, which coincidentally is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, make the Buskers Bern Festival a unique event.
Maximum exposure for minimal cost
The idea of the Buskers Festival dates back over 40 years and the event has since gained worldwide prominence. Such open-air festivals in the heart of towns allow the general public to experience a diverse range of cultural attractions at minimal cost. Free access for all guarantees maximum exposure. Instead of tickets, Buskers Bern sells programme booklets and festival wristbands for CHF 10 to cover the costs of organising the event. All the artistes have their transportation, food and accommodation costs reimbursed. It is the audience however who will contribute to their performance fee. Right where the artistes perform by means of donations and tips paid into a hat.
